Hurricane Safety, Aftermath, Preparedness & Response: A Guide for CIS Field Inspectors in the Oil and Gas Industry

As we approach hurricane season, it is crucial to prioritize safety and preparedness to mitigate risks and ensure the well-being of everyone involved in our operations. Hurricanes can bring devastating winds, heavy rainfall, storm surges, and flooding, posing significant challenges to our industry. This guide aims to equip you with essential information and protocols to navigate through these situations effectively.

Preparing for a Hurricane:

  • Monitor Weather Updates: Stay informed about developing storms through reliable sources like the National Hurricane Center (NHC) and local weather authorities. Regular updates will help in making timely decisions.
  • Review Emergency Plans: Familiarize yourself with the company's safety and response plan. Ensure all contact information for emergency responders and key personnel is up-to-date.
  • Secure Equipment and Facilities: Prior to the storm's arrival, secure all equipment, tools, and materials that could become projectiles in high winds. Protect critical infrastructure and facilities against potential flood damage.
  • Stock Essential Supplies: Have ample supplies of drinking water, non-perishable food, medical supplies, flashlights, batteries, and communication devices. Ensure vehicles are fueled and ready for use.
  • Protect Data and Documents: Back up essential electronic data and documents. Store physical documents in waterproof containers or move them to higher ground if flooding is anticipated.

During the Hurricane:

  • Safety First: Stay indoors once conditions deteriorate. Avoid windows and seek shelter in the most secure part of the building.
  • Monitor Communication Channels: Keep abreast of updates from CIS safety team and local authorities. Follow their instructions promptly and precisely.
  • Emergency Response Readiness: Be prepared to respond immediately after the hurricane passes. Assess the damage, prioritize safety inspections, and report any emergencies promptly.

After the Hurricane:

  • Safety Assessment: Conduct a thorough safety assessment of your immediate surroundings before proceeding with inspections. Look out for hazards such as downed power lines, structural damage, and unstable debris.
  • Document Damage: Document any damage or issues encountered during your inspections using photos, videos, and detailed notes. Report findings promptly to your supervisor or the designated authority.
  • Employee Support: Check in with colleagues and team members to ensure their well-being. Offer support and assistance as needed.

Additional Tips:

  • Stay Informed: Remain updated on road closures, curfews, and evacuation orders.
  • Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Always wear appropriate PPE, including helmets, gloves, and safety goggles, when conducting inspections post-hurricane.
  • Emotional Well-being: Be mindful of the emotional toll emergencies can take. Seek support if you or your team members need it.
  • By prioritizing safety, preparedness, and a swift response, we can effectively navigate through hurricane events in the oil and gas industry. Your commitment to these guidelines plays a crucial role in safeguarding lives, protecting our assets, and minimizing disruptions to our operations.

Thank you for your dedication to safety and for your continued efforts to uphold our standards during challenging times. Stay safe!

Forrest Webster, nominated by his coworker, Ben Logan, stating Forrest is the pillar of safety. Forrest is always keeping the contractor and site safe, all while maintaining a positive attitude. He is a crucial part of productivity and safety.

Why is Safety so important to you?
Forrest: Working safely can certainly minimize and potentially eliminate the unforeseen circumstances related to unsafe work behaviors and unsafe work sites. Ultimately arriving to work safe, completing the day’s work safely, and returning to our destination safely allows us to provide for our families.

Why do you think submitting near-miss reports is important?

Forrest: Near Miss reporting provides detailed information to our employer of the potential workplace hazards. This information can then be relayed to the employees which can help alert the workers to be aware of additional hazards that could possibly occur throughout the days tasks and related activities.

This industry sets the standards in construction related workplace and worker safety. When it comes to safety the beast is always alive and it can get you when you least expect it.
